About chum salmon

The "dog" salmon, named for the hooked jaws and canine teeth spawning males grow. Chum are big, hard-pulling fish of 8–15 lb that turn olive with purple and green calico bars as they enter fresh water. Summer runs reach Southcentral streams and hatchery terminal areas in July and August, and the Yukon and Tanana carry fall runs. Anglers who know them rate the fight above coho, and they take pink or chartreuse flies and bright spoons.

Oncorhynchus keta, family Salmonidae.
